Volunteering Conservation Trainee Ranger
18-month training post – 4 days per week
The Peak District National Park, Peak Park Conservation Volunteers (PPCV) team is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to gain hands-on experience and develop professional skills to be able to start a career in the environmental sector.
Over 18 months, you’ll work alongside our experienced team, learning a wide range of practical countryside skills and supporting conservation projects across the National Park. Training opportunities may include dry-stone walling, chainsaw and bush cutter use, and outdoor first aid, alongside valuable project and people management experience.
In the first few months you’ll receive close support and mentoring, but as your confidence grows, you’ll take on more independent responsibility, from leading practical tasks to supporting programmes such as our Green Leaders initiative and learning support groups.
We’re looking for someone who:
• Is enthusiastic about conservation and the environment.
• Keen to learn practical skills.
• Enjoys working as part of a team and engaging with volunteers.
About you
This is an entry level trainee post aimed at those with little to no prior work experience in the sector.
The ideal candidate will have;
• Little to no work experience in a similar role (this is a training role for a new entrant)
• Knowledge or demonstrable interest in conservation, countryside management, or working in protected landscapes
• Awareness of the role of volunteering in supporting organisational objectives and community engagement
• Basic understanding of health & safety principles, risk assessments, and safeguarding when working with groups
• Experience or knowledge of practical conservation tasks (e.g., habitat management, path maintenance, or similar outdoor activities)• Experience of using tools (saw’s, hammers, loppers, digging equipment etc.) especially in an outdoor setting
• Competence with IT for administrative tasks (e.g., using MS Office, databases, or online booking systems)
• Good communication skills for engaging with a variety of audiences, including volunteers, young people, and underrepresented groups
• Organisational skills to help with planning, preparation, and coordination of sessions, equipment and resources
• Full UK driving licence
• First Aid qualification (or willingness to train)
• Experience of working as or supporting volunteers, community groups, or young people (desirable)
Further Information
This is a training role that will end after 18 months, the aim is to equip you with the skills needed to progress in the sector, however we cannot guarantee a role at the end of the fixed period. This is not an apprenticeship position; therefore, it doesn’t meet the education requirements for those under 18. This post requires a DBS check.
