The aim of this traineeship is to develop your skills and provide valuable work experience in order to help you start a career in the environmental/conservation farm advice sector.
This traineeship will work partly within the Authority’s Land & Nature Farm Adviser Team and partly with the Morridge Hill Country Landscape Recovery Project Team. The role will focus on providing farm advice including supporting farmers and landowners in delivering positive conservation land management via environmental schemes (including private finance) with the aim of helping the Authority to meet its statutory purposes and outcomes of the National Park Management Plan.
About you
This is an entry level post aimed at those with little to no prior work experience in the sector.
The ideal candidate will have;
• A keen interest and some knowledge of upland farming, the countryside and the current issues
• Enthusiasm and keen interest in the national park and conservation land management including nature conservation, cultural heritage, recreation, sustainable land use.
• Some experience with working on upland farms or with upland farmers.
• A basic understanding of current environmental schemes relevant to agriculture and a national park.
• A basic knowledge of other Government departments, agencies and other relevant organisations to the agricultural sector.
• Good communication skills (verbal & written)
• Good IT and organisational skills
• Experience or a qualification in a subject relevant to the farm adviser post
• A valid UK driving license
Job description
During the traineeship you will develop skills in and eventually deliver;
Skills
• Develop skills in communication and negotiation
• Basic survey assessment of farmland including habitats, heritage and other landscape features
• A good understanding of upland farming issues and associated environmental interest
• An ability to identify opportunities for conservation, access and recreation in farmed landscapes
• A good understanding of current environmental schemes and application processes
• A good understanding of current environmental and other regulatory legislation relating to farmland and national parks, including planning requirements relating to agriculture
• An awareness of future green finance (including carbon credit & renewables) opportunities within the national park.
Eventually deliver
• Liaison and provision of support and advice to farmers and land managers on conservation matters linked to national park purposes
• Environmental Scheme applications
• Co-ordination of NPA responses to statutory and non-statutory consultations
Training you will receive
There is some flexibility in this area depending on your career aspirations and the needs of the role.
There will be some standard elements, which will include;
• Training in whole farm survey assessment (e.g. identification of habitat types, species, cultural heritage) and land and habitat management
• Training in environmental schemes, applications and processes
• Basic training in environmental legislation
• Basic training in use of GIS
