About Us

The Peak District National Park Authority protects, enhances and shares the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Peak District. We also support the economic and social wellbeing of the communities in which we work.

As the UK’s first National Park, the Peak District has a rich history and has been shaped by the interaction of people and nature over thousands of years. The Park is enjoyed by millions each year looking for adventure, knowledge and a fantastic day out.

We’re currently looking for a full-time (37 hours per week) Planner to join us on a permanent basis.

The Benefits

- Salary of £27,514 - £30,095
- Local government pension scheme
- Blended home/office working
- Develop specialist skills in rural planning, with a focus on landscape and heritage conservation
- Experience the stunning landscapes and cultural heritage of the Peak District on a daily basis

These roles are ideal for RTPI qualified planning professionals to help to protect the valued characteristics of our National Park and provide an opportunity to deal with a wide range of planning casework.

The Peak District National Park is a treasured landscape that has been shaped by the long interaction of natural and cultural forces. You will play an important role in maintaining the balance between people and nature to ensure that the Park can be enjoyed for generations to come.

What’s more, we are based between Manchester, Sheffield and Derby, making this the ideal opportunity to break away from city life and commute to the country.

The Role

As a Planner in the Authority’s development management service, you will process planning applications and associated development management matters.

Reporting to the Area Team Manager, you will negotiate with applicants on planning applications and prepare reports and recommendations to the Planning Committee.
You will frequently work alongside our in-house conservation, archaeology, landscape, ecology, and arboriculture specialists, providing excellent opportunities for professional development in conservation practice.

You will also:

- Provide advice to applicants and members of the public on planning matters
- Prepare case documentation on planning appeals, including formal hearings and public inquiries

About You

To join us as a Planner, you will need:

- Experience of development management practice, planning law and regulations
- Effective negotiation skills and the ability to make balanced judgements
- Good IT skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and databases
- An RTPI recognised qualification and relevant experience

RTPI membership would be desirable. Evidence of continuing professional development in planning and related subjects would be beneficial to your application, as would knowledge of design and/or construction issues, and rural planning and/or conservation issues.

If you would like an informal discussion about the post prior to making an application, please contact Mark Nuttall, South Area Team Manager on 01629 816335 or at
